The KCA is a 30-mm gas-operated, single-barrel "revolver" cannon. The KCA features an airborne pneumatic re-charging system and ammunition that has a higher ratio of propellant charge to projectile weight that results in a higher firing rate and muzzle velocity.

The KCA fires the following type of ammunition: target practice (TP), high-explosive incendiary (HEI), semi-armor-piercing HEI (SAPHEI) and armor-piercing (AP).
