The Il-76 Mainstay (Russian designation A-50) is an adaptation of the Candid cargo/transport aircraft (see separate database entry) used to carry a Russian airborne warning and control system (AWACS). It replaced the Tu-126.

The Mainstay is similar in appearance to the Candid except for the addition of a large rotating radome above the center fuselage. The Mainstay has both overland and over-ocean detection capability and is provided with a communications and control electronics...
