This was the most widely flown bomber in Russian service, employed in the bombing and missile-launch roles as well as several support roles including electronic countermeasures (ECM) platform and tanker. Originally designed for free-fall bomb delivery, it was adapted for use as an air-to-surface missile carrier. It is no longer in Russian service. A version of this aircraft, the H-6, remains in Chinese service (see separate record).
