The Su-17 Fitter-C is a ground-attack fighter with variable-sweep wings. Known in Russian service as the Strizh (Martlet), the Su-17 evolved from the Su-7 Fitter-A fixed-wing strike fighter (see separate database entry) and was designed to improve on the latter's very high takeoff and landing speeds, very short range and low maximum weapons load.
