ISIS-K was formed by disaffected former members South Asian jihadist groups in late 2014, following contact with the central ISIS leadership in Syria and Iraq. After an initial pledge of loyalty by the ISIS-K faction in late 2014, ISIS central leadership recognized the group as a legitimate faction in January 2015.
