Protests erupted around Belarus in August after presidential elections
that were widely seen as rigged. President Lukashenko has cracked
down on demonstrators and shows no intention of stepping down
in response to their demands. Above, police detain students during
a march through the city center of Minsk on Sept. 1. At least 40
people were detained by security forces during that demonstration.
