The Coast Guard plays an important role in any U.S. strategy in the
Indo-Pacific region. It is well-suited to work with various countries
on maritime security issues and demonstrate a rules-based order. Here,
USCGC Alex Haley transfers custody of a detained Chinese-flagged
fishing vessel to a Chinese coast guard patrol vessel in the Sea of Japan
in June 2018. A joint operation between the two coast guards seized
the vessel, which was suspected of illegal high seas drift net fishing.
