South Korea’s Modern Navy

South Korea’s naval modernization over the last two decades has added
new capabilities to its fleet, including large-deck amphibious ships. The
first, Dokdo, is seen above during search-and-rescue operations after the
Sewol ferry sank in the Yellow Sea in April 2014. An improved sister,
Marado, was commissioned into service in June 2021. Seoul has greater
ambitions, with plans to acquire a light aircraft carrier in the early 2030s.
