Active electronically scanning array (AESA) radars have become core
equipment for fighter jets over the last two decades. Thales in France
was an early developer of the technology with its passive RBE2 radar
designed for the Rafale jet. Above is a model of the Thales RBE2 AA
radar, the AESA variant of the system, at the Defendory exhibition in
Greece in 2006, not long after it was rolled out for the first time
