A frame from a high-speed video camera shows the record-setting firing
of an electromagnetic railgun at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren, Va.,
on Jan. 31, 2008. The shot was fired at 10.64 megajoules with a muzzle velocity
of 2,520 meters per second – more than 5,600 miles per hour. In 2016, the Navy
will install and fire a prototype of its railgun from a Joint High-Speed Vessel.
