Col. Assimi Goita overthrew Mali's transitional government on May 24, less
than a year after the previous government was replaced in a coup that Goita
also participated in. Mali's constitutional court upheld his leadership on May 28
and he was sworn in as interim president on June 7. He has pledged to maintain
the transition plan that calls for elections to be held in February 2022. Above,
