On Dec. 8, Margaret Keenan, 90, (above) became the first person in
the U.K. to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine after it
was approved by British authorities. The U.S. certified the vaccine
on Dec. 14. Effective vaccines are the first step toward ending the
coronavirus pandemic. Enough people must be immunized to ensure
the virus can no longer spread. This process is not expected to be
completed in the U.S. until the middle of 2021 at the earliest.
