The participation of active-duty military personnel and veterans
in the assault on the Capitol on Jan. 6 has brought renewed focus
to the problem of extremists in the U.S. military. Newly confirmed
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, the first Black person to hold the
post, has ordered a 60-day standdown for the armed forces as an
initial step toward combating the threat. Above, Austin meets with a
