Royal Navy divers have carried out a controlled explosion of a German World War II mine in the Mediterranean Sea, reports the U.K. Ministry of Defense.
HMS Ledbury detected an object on the seabed in the Bay of Cagliari off Sardinia, said officials.
The SeaFox remote-controlled robot mine-disposal system was first used to inspect the device. Decades of marine growth then necessitated a closer look by mine-clearance divers, said officials.
