An Iranian scientist who was first suspected of defecting to the U.S. but then claimed he was acting as a double agent has not been seen since his return to Iran, United Press International reports.

Shahram Amiri allegedly defected during a trip to Saudi Arabia in 2009. He eventually claimed he was kidnapped and said he only pretended to defect.

An Iranian opposition website says he has been tortured on suspicion of revealing state secrets, reported the Guardian (U.K.).
