Washington Pledges Military Help

The United States has promised to help modernize the Philippines military, Agence France-Presse reports.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met this week in Washington with Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario, who said his country hoped to lease equipment to upgrade its aged naval fleet.

Del Rosario is meeting with Defense Secretary Robert Gates and other Pentagon officials to discuss what kind of equipment the Philippines needs, said Clinton.
