The United States has threatened sanctions against the Ivory Coast if the internationally recognized winner of last month's presidential election is not permitted to assume power, the Voice of America News reports.
Incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo refused to concede to opposition candidate Alassane Ouattara. Ivory Coast's independent election commission named Ouattara the winner on Dec. 2.
