U.S. Navy Sails By Disputed Island; Beijing Calls Move 'Dangerous And Irresponsible'

A U.S. Navy vessel has sailed close to a disputed island in the South China Sea, reports Al Jazeera.

On Saturday, the USS Curtis Wilbur missile destroyer sailed within 12 nautical miles of China-controlled Triton Island in the Paracel Island chain, said a Pentagon spokesman.

The move was aimed at challenging "excessive maritime claims of parties that claim the Paracel Islands" without notifying any of the claimants, said the spokesman.
