After five years of battling, U.S. forces have withdrawn from the isolated Korengal valley in Kunar province in eastern Afghanistan, the Washington Post reports.
Nearly 50 American soldiers have died in Korengal since 2005. The Afghan death toll has been far higher, making the six-mile-long area one of the bloodiest pieces of ground in the country, according to U.S. and Afghan officials.
