American officials say the U.S. is stepping up covert attacks against Al-Qaida militants in southern Yemen, the New York Times reports.

Yemeni ground forces have been pulled back the capital to deal with an anti-government uprising, leaving fewer options for Washington against Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), said U.S. officials.
