U.S. Award To Jailed Activist Leads To Termination Of Cooperation Treaty

Kyrgyzstan has canceled a cooperation treaty with the United States after the U.S. State Dept. gave an award to an imprisoned activist in that country, reports Agence France-Presse.
Last week, the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry criticized State for awarding Azimjon Askarov, an ethnic Uzbek activist, its Human Rights Defense Award. Askarov is serving a life sentence for allegedly inciting clashes between Uzbeks and Kyrgyz in southern Kyrgyzstan five years ago.
