In Unusual Winter Push, Taliban Launches Attacks In Helmand Province

The Taliban has stepped up its efforts in Afghanistan's southwestern Helmand province, reports the Stars and Stripes.

For example, the group launched new attacks in the Sangin and Marjah districts on Dec. 31, said a provincial spokesman.

The action is a departure from past practices. The Taliban has typically retreated to western Pakistan during the winter before returning in the spring when the weather is more favorable.
