A major Burmese militant group has established its own military academy, reports the Irrawaddy (Burma).
The United Wa State Army (UWSA) opened the academy on Sept. 11 in the village of Yaung Tein, Panghsang, an area in the northeastern Shan state that it controls.
More than 100 cadets are expected to make up the academy's first class. The institution will provide a four-year education, with the goal of preparing a new crop of leaders for modern challenges, officials said.
