The Sri Lankan government has named a new commander for its army, reports the Daily Mirror (Sri Lanka).
On Monday, Maj. Gen. Shavendra Silva, the army chief of staff, was promoted to lieutenant general and named army commander. He succeeds Lt. Gen. Mahesh Senanayake.
His promotion came despite concern from the U.S. and U.N. over alleged human-rights violations during the war against the Tamil Tigers.
