U.N. Sends Additional Peacekeepers For October Elections

The U.N. Security Council says it will deploy another 500 peacekeepers to Ivory Coast before planned Oct. 31 elections, Reuters reports.
The elections have been delayed for years.
There are already about 8,500 peacekeepers in Ivory Coast trying to maintain order after a civil war in 2002 and 2003.
The U.N.'s special envoy, Young-Jin Choi, said he was not concerned about violence before the elections, expressing optimism the voting would take place this time.
