The United Nations has temporarily withdrawn its foreign staff and shut its mission in Kandahar city ahead of an anticipated allied military offensive, Reuters reports.
About 23,000 NATO ground troops and Afghan police are expected to begin a large-scale operation in Kandahar province starting in June.
Foreign staffers of the mission were relocated to Kabul, while Afghan employees were told to stay home, a U.N. spokeswoman said, adding that it was a "temporary measure."
