On July 14, 2026, U.K. Defense Innovation (UKDI) announced a competition for novel autonomy and robotics to seek out multi-domain autonomous systems. Funded by the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), the competition offers approximately US$ 1.3 million (GBP 1 million) in total funding, which will be distributed across two distinct stages.
The competition is structured to attract low technology readiness level concepts that can introduce new military capabilities to counter emerging national security threats. The official description notes that the research may involve speculative or high-risk elements, provided the proposals are firmly grounded in scientific theory. This initiative serves as a bridge to transition early-stage ideas into advanced defense solutions capable of addressing future threats.
