Tuareg rebels in northern Mali have declared what they call the independent state of Azawad, Reuters reports.
The National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) released a statement on Friday declaring the new nation after capturing several key towns in the region.
The MNLA recognizes all borders with neighboring states and will create a democratic state based on the principles of the U.N. charter, says the statement.
