Hours after Bahrain announced it was lifting 11 weeks of martial law, security forces cracked down on protests in numerous Shi'ite villages, reports the New York Times.
Tanks and troops were reported leaving the heart of Manama on Wednesday.
On Thursday, police used rubber bullets, stun grenades, shotguns and tear gas against the demonstrators, human-rights officials said.
