Witnesses say that Ivorian troops loyal to President Laurent Gbagbo have fired on protesters in the economic capital of Abidjan, the New York Times reports.
Reports of the death toll on Wednesday have varied widely.
At least 15 supporters of Alassane Ouattara, Gbagbo's electoral rival, were killed in Abidjan, Ivorian human-rights officials said. Amnesty International reported nine killed.
