The Taiwanese Defense Ministry is moving ahead with plans to reduce overall troop numbers, reports the Taipei Times.
The reduction is part of a transition to a fully volunteer force, which is expected to be completed by 2015, said a ministry spokeswoman.
The cuts are needed in part because of the higher costs of professional soldiers, the spokeswoman said.
The size of the cuts has not been finalized, but estimates may be made public as soon as July 1.
