Military officials say Philippine troops and police have killed a top Abu Sayyaf commander in Lantawan in the province of Basilan Island, the New York Times reports.
Abdukarim Sali, who was reported killed Sunday, was believed behind a May 2001 kidnapping of three Americans and 17 Filipinos from a popular resort. Several hostages were later killed, some by beheading.
A firefight was sparked after the military chanced upon a group of Abu Sayyaf militants, officials said....
