French officials say that Mali's recent military coup and the growing Tuareg rebellion has bolstered the Al-Qaida branch in the region, Reuters reports.
Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) is likely to take advantage of the situation to expand its area of activity, said a French Foreign Ministry spokesman.
The Tuareg rebel group in Mali has been joined by the Islamist group Ansar Dine, which has known links to AQIM, said the ministry spokesman.
