A senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) official says that Iran will expand its missile capabilities if Western countries continue to push for disarmament, reports the state-run Press TV.

Brig. Gen. Hossein Salami, the IRGC deputy chief, told state media on Saturday that Iran had chosen to limit the range of its missiles but could make "a strategic leap" if international pressure on its missile program continued.

Iran has no technical limits to further expanding the range of its missiles, he said.

His comments came hours after Tehran successfully tested the new Hoveyzeh surface-to-surface cruise missile, reported Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

The missile, which has a range of 840 miles (1,350 km), was introduced to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Islamic revolution that ousted the Shah and brought the current theocratic government to power.
