Defense Secretary Robert Gates has confirmed that the U.S. State Dept. is heading direct talks with the Taliban, saying the discussions are "very preliminary," the Guardian (U.K.) reports.
Gates confirmed the talks Sunday on the CNN program "State of the Union," a day after Afghan President Hamid Karzai revealed they were ongoing.
Other unnamed countries are also involved in the negotiations, said Gates.
