Surface Fleet To Operate Under Sleep, Watch Rules; Some Sailors Have 100-Hour Work Weeks

The U.S. Navy has decided to institute formal rest guidelines for sailors on surface vessels for the first time, reports the Navy Times.

In an internal Navy message on Sept. 15, Vice Adm. Thomas Rowden, the head of Naval Surface Force, ordered surface fleet commanders to implement watch schedules and shipboard routines that better sync with circadian rhythms and natural sleep cycles.
