Spanish shipbuilder Navantia has begun construction of the first of five Avante 2200 corvettes for the Saudi navy, reports Forecast International (Conn.).
On Monday, a steel-cutting ceremony was held at Navantia’s San Fernando shipyard in southern Spain.
The first plate for the ship was for Block 401 of the engine room, said a Navantia release.
Delivery of the first vessel is scheduled for October 2021, with additional deliveries to take place every four months.
