The U.S. government has offered a reward for information on the location of the youngest son of Al-Qaida founder Osama bin Laden, reports the State Dept.

On Thursday, the department announced a $1 million reward for information leading to the whereabouts of Hamza bin Laden.

Hamza has taken a greater leadership role in Al-Qaida in recent years and has released audio statements on behalf of the group encouraging attacks on Western targets.

The State Dept. designated the younger bin Laden a Specially Designated Global Terrorist in January 2017.

Hamza is married to the daughter of Mohammed Atta, who led Al-Qaida's Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, reported USA Today.

Letters seized from bin Laden's hideout in Pakistan indicated that he was grooming Hamza  as his successor.

Hamza's current location is unknown. He may be hiding in the tribal areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan, Michael Evanoff, an assistant secretary for diplomatic security, told the newspaper.
