Many Afghan troops in the southern Kandahar province are walking away from service over their pay, reports the Canadian Press.
The Afghan government has eliminated pay incentives for troops operating in the war-torn south, encouraging many to head north, where they can get the same money in a less dangerous place, according to Canadian officials in the region.
