The first piracy trial to take place in Germany in four centuries has opened in Hamburg, Bloomberg News reports.
Ten Somalis are charged with attacking the cargo ship MS Taipan in April on the Indian Ocean. The crew hid in a secure room and were rescued by Dutch marines.
An Amsterdam court extradited the suspects to Germany in June.
The defendants could receive sentences of 10-15 years if found guilty, reported the Deutsche Welle.
