Sentry AWACS Aircraft Begin $60 Million Communications Upgrade

The U.S. Air Force has begun upgrading the communication systems on its E-3 Sentry airborne warning and control system (AWACS) aircraft, reports the Air Force Times.
The overhaul is expected to cost $60 million.
The first installation of the AN/UPX-40 system was completed in April by the AWACS Next-Generation Identification-Friend-or-Foe (NGIFF) program at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, Mass. All 32 Air Force Sentries are due to get the upgrade.
