The U.S. Senate has confirmed CIA Director Leon Panetta as the next defense secretary, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.
All 100 senators voted Tuesday for Panetta to succeed the retiring Robert Gates.
He is expected to assume his new post early next month.
President Obama has nominated Gen. David Petraeus to replace Panetta at the Central Intelligence Agency.
