The Burkinabe military says it has killed 146 militants in separate operations in response to a deadly terrorist attack in the north, reports Agence France-Presse.

Early Monday, militants launched an attack on the town of Kain in the northern Yatenta province, which borders Mali, killing at least 14 civilians, the military said.

In response, the military launched operations in the Yatenta, Loroum and Kossi provinces.

The air and ground operations killed 146 militants, said the army. This figure could not be independently verified, according to AFP.

Burkinabe forces suffered light injuries but no fatalities, said the army.

The terror attack came a day before a summit of the five Sahel countries -- Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger -- in the Burkinabe capital, Ouagadougou.

The five countries have formed the G5 Sahel force to coordinate counterterror efforts in the region.

Increasing militant attacks pushed the Burkinabe government to declare a state of emergency in December.
