The Russian navy has expanded its area of responsibility in efforts against pirates off the coast of Somalia, RIA Novosti reports.
The navy's escort route in the Gulf of Aden was moved further from Somalia's coast, extending it to about 236 miles (380 km), according to the commander of the Pacific Fleet.
Naval infantry teams now board escorted vessels with Russian crew members while the ships pass through the gulf for extra protection, the admiral said.
