Russia Gets Security Role In New Defense Pact

Armenia and Russia plan to sign amendments to a 1995 defense pact this week, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports.

The treaty regulates the presence of a Russian military base in the Armenian city of Gyumri.

Under the amended pact, Russia's basing rights will be extended by 24 years to 2044.

Russian troops will also be assigned not only to protect "the interests of the Russian Federation," but also "to ensure the security of the Republic of Armenia."
