The U.S. Navy has decided to retain its riverine forces, which were resurrected six years ago for operations in Iraq, reports the Stars and Stripes.
Such forces previously saw service during the Vietnam War, then were dismantled.
The units have been operating recently as a quick-reaction force, performing more than 2,000 missions between 2007 and 2011, said naval officials.
