Report Suggests Sophisticated Libyan Weapons Being Used By Somali Pirates

An Algerian-based analyst says Somali pirates have acquired weapons from Libya, including mines, Stinger missiles and other shoulder-mounted missile launchers, Reuters reports.

Such weapons are being sold on the black market in Sierra Leone, Liberia and other countries, and Somali pirates have been among the buyers, said Judith van der Merwe, a senior maritime security analyst from the Algiers-based African Center for the Study and Research on Terrorism.
