The number of forcibly displaced people reached 70.8 million in 2018, reports the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.
The figures are the highest recorded in the organization's 70-year history and represent a 2.3 million increase since 2017, according to the yearly Global Trends report released on Wednesday.
Researchers noted that the actual number is likely higher, since the figures do not fully account for the crisis in Venezuela, where nearly 4 million have fled.
