Philippine security forces killed a communist New People's Army commander in the southern region of Mindanao over the weekend, the Mindanao Examiner (Philippines) reports.
The rebel leader, Faustino Libot, was the head of an NPA assassination unit called Sparrow, said an army spokesman.
A rebel base was also taken in the fighting, which took place in the village of Tamayong in Calinan district in Davao City, the spokesman said on Monday.
