Police in Pakistan say the governor of Punjab province has been assassinated in Islamabad, the BBC reports.
Gov. Salman Taseer was shot Tuesday by a member of his own security detail as he got out of his car near a market in the capital, police said.
He reportedly died of his injuries in a nearby hospital.
Taseer was a senior member of the ruling Pakistan People's Party, and had spoken out repeatedly against the nation's blasphemy law, noted the Times of India.
